The Wooden Gruffalo (Photogrammetry)

The wooden Gruffalo project was something, I've wanted to do since seeing the sculpture at my local woodland park. The aim for this mini project was to complete a photogrammetry scan and turn it into a optimised and functional 3D asset within unreal within 1-2 days. I wanted it to have a more raw and newly sculpted feel to it so using the tri planar method within substance painter I was able to apply a nice new wood to it. I took inspiration from the Wow sculpture that William Faucher scanned. Creating a small and simple scene to focus on the scanned asset itself. The scan is made up of 339 images.

Metashape built a model of 224 million polys to which I was able clean up and then decimate to make engine ready. The model was baked down to help keep as much detail as possible and combined with the new wood texture. The scene was rendered using Path tracer withing unreal engine. I might in near future reuse the scan and original texture to recreate the sculpture for a woodland scene.
